Statistics among properties within the given geography's data set for the HCMI Footprint of rooms Per Occupied Room. HCMI is the industry's standard method of calculating the footprint of hotel stays and meeting space utilization.
You can choose between six measures and the tool will calculate the data based on your preference. For example, if you choose Hotel Energy Usage Per Occupied Room (kWh), the tool will generate the range of total energy usage divided by the total occupied rooms for hotels chosen geography and hotel class, in kWh. The measures include:
In every location, the range of performance varies widely across hotels. The Hotel Footprinting Tool allows you to choose a statistic based on your estimation of where the hotels fall within that range. By default, the mean (average) is selected. The options are:
The base data are taken from the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Tool (CHSB) 2015 data set, with a guidance document outlining the methodology both freely available online through the Cornell University Center for Hospitality Research.
The base data have been enhanced with two supplemental data sets.
Data Set 1: the Asia Pacific Hotel Sustainability Trends 2015 research study from Horwath HTL and Greenview, which included additional data from 2014 calendar year, using the same methodology as CHSB (and most of which will be included in the CHSB2016 data set), for the following geographies:
Data Set 2: an extrapolation exercise was performed, for the Footprinting tool only, for locations at the country geography level. Using 1) the global average HCMI figure, 2) the global average rooms to meeting space ratio, and 3) average CO2e per kWh of electricity for the entire data set, these figures were weighted against the International Energy Agency (IEA) CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion, 2013 Edition country average output of CO2 per kWh of electricity, proportionate to the ratio of difference for each country compared to the global average. A rule-of-thumb of 75% of a hotel's energy usage being derived from electricity was applied, and that figure was multiplied by the respective ratio of each country's CO2 per kWh compared to the global average, then adding in the remaining 25% of CO2 from energy usage using the same global average, and applying the global average room floor area to meeting space floor area to generate mean HCMI figures for the remaining countries. These countries with extrapolated values are shaded in a pattern in the Footprinting tool. For some countries for which no data are available from the IEA, the extrapolation was not performed.
While we understand that global extrapolation is a broad and high-level figure, we believe that it is better than other current footprinting methods currently available. Furthermore as the CHSB data set grows in reach and depth over time, we will be able to reduce extrapolation, while making improvements in the remaining countries that still require it for footprinting exercises.
